District heating with Flowline – from first contact to completed substation
District heating is one of the most worry-free, reliable and environmentally friendly heating solutions on the market today. With a well-developed district heating network, you get stable heat and hot water without your own boiler, without noise and with minimal maintenance. At Flowline, we have extensive experience in complete district heating installations – from laying culverts in the ground to a finished substation in your property. We take care of the entire process so that it is simple, safe and transparent for you as a customer. Here we describe the installation step by step with a focus on technology, quality and efficiency.
1. Free advice and needs analysis
It all starts with a personal site visit where we review your property's conditions and needs.
Our technical work includes:
- Analysis of existing heating system, energy consumption and domestic hot water demand.
- Checking the site's conditions for ground installation (distance to district heating pipeline, ground conditions, possible obstacles).
- Sizing of substation, culvert and heat transfer to maximize efficiency and minimize heat losses.
- Calculation of expected energy savings and operating costs compared to your current system.
The result is a clear quote with a fixed price, estimated savings and recommended technical solution.
2. Design and permits
We handle all administration and planning for you:
- Contact and agreement with the district heating supplier (e.g. Stockholm Exergi, E.ON, Öresundskraft, etc.).
- Application for excavation permit and land lease from the municipality or community.
- Precise placement of culvert and substation for minimal impact on garden, driveway or property.
- Technical drawing and dimensioning of culverts (usually twin-pipes with PEX insulation) for low heat losses and long service life.
3. Earthworks and culvert construction
Once the permits are complete, our own ground team will carry out the excavation and installation of the culvert.
Technical process:
- Precision excavation with an excavator or suction excavator for minimal damage to the site.
- Installation of factory-insulated district heating culvert with alarm wire for leakage monitoring.
- Sand bed and backfill according to industry standards to protect the pipes and minimize settlement.
- Careful control of depth, slope and distance to other pipes (electricity, water, sewage).
- Restoration of the ground surface – grass, tiles or asphalt are laid back exactly as it was.
We are used to tight plots and sensitive environments and always leave the plot in top condition.
4. Substation installation and commissioning
When the culvert is pulled forward to the house, we install the substation - the heart of your district heating system.
Our steps include:
- Installation of a modern, compact substation (e.g. from Metro Therm, Danfoss or similar) adapted to your house's energy needs.
- Connection of primary and secondary side with high-quality valves, heat exchangers and control equipment.
- Installation of metering equipment for accurate billing and energy statistics.
- Integration with existing radiator system or underfloor heating and domestic hot water system.
- Pressure testing of the entire system and insulation of pipes for minimal heat loss.
- Programming of the control unit for optimal temperature and legionella-proof hot water.
- Remote monitoring (optional) so we can see the operation in real time and optimize the settings if necessary.
After the work is completed, we conduct a thorough review with you as the customer and hand over complete documentation.
5. Service and long-term follow-up
A district heating installation is in principle maintenance-free, but we still offer service agreements for extra security:
- Annual check of substation and settings.
- Remote monitoring that provides early warning of operational deviations.
- Quick response to any errors (often fixed the same day).
- Help with optimizing subscriptions and power tariffs at the district heating supplier.
With the correct settings and regular maintenance, the system will last an unlimited amount of time.
